WEEK 1- 23/09

  • A model of VR testing
Sungchul Jung * and Robert. W Lindeman

Two key concepts in Virtual Reality (VR):

immersion and presence ( illusion), and how they are used to evaluate VR experiences. The past 50 years, researchers have studied how different sensory inputs (sight, sound, touch) affect how immersive and real VR feels. These sensory cues can improve realism, but that doesn’t always work. or lead to a better VR immersive sense.

Immersion refers to how much a VR system can make one feel like “in” a virtual world, based on technical factors like visuals, sound, and movement tracking. Presence, on the other hand, is the subjective feeling of actually being there in that virtual world, even though you know it’s not real.

More realistic sensory cue can increase immersion feeloing, but they don’t always make one feel more present Sometimes, adding more sensory details might just make the experience feel more real.

The author suggest a model that separates immersionpresence (illusion), and coherence (the internal consistency of the VR world) into independent dimensions. There are actually three dimension of the model which is quite well. (⸝⸝⸝ᵒ̴̶̷̥́⌑ᵒ̴̶̷̣̥̀⸝⸝⸝)  These elements influence each other, but not always in a predictable way. They also propose considering user preference as an important factor when designing VR experiences.

In conclusion, the article emphasizes that improving sensory realism can make VR systems more immersive, but it doesn’t always guarantee a stronger sense of presence. Researchers and developers should consider how these factors interact and think about user preferences when designing VR experiences.

DIE group

We used the random code to determined the group

Start working with Lexi, Deva, Iwan, Joshua

we are group3!

WEEK 2- 30/09

  • A story
first story with Klaus

A hollywood hero model? which ask for a classic hero type and classic storyline and classic hero and villain. It basically just intro-up-down-down-down-up-success

It reminds me about the Spaider man -hero never back(sorry forget the name maybe it is it) that’s a really classic ameriane hero story. But it was a good story that attract the audience form the beginning to the end. Which is hard to achieve in mine story always. I had to find more about this.

Trying to explain another story movie’s storyline.

I try to break the story and analysis the story beat , but I find out is hard to define a story beat or a emotion beat with our consider about how they work or what’s their roles in the whole story. I think I maybe need more reference to analysis?

Anyway it’s really helpful class. I like the message.

WEEK 3- 07/10

  • FIGMA of our story project!
we start from the very beginning

08/10/2024

As the subject are surrounding with theme such as family, relationship, coming up ti age, lost,,,,,any of that, WE GROUP start a conversation about how their family was and how does we coming to age we are. We all find out there are some really similar things happens in our life. We all feel like being treated like a Private property and nothing we really have, what we got are all coming from our parents and they need we to do that they like to achieve their ideal.

That’s why we choose the theme about “Self-acceptance”as our theme. Some of us will punished themself by a dirty sentence their parents yelled to them, just because we didn’t using the money to made or do what they want, and maybe we will carry this sense of guilty to the very end to our life.

I quite like this theme. And we come up with some initial plans. That will be a time loop-which combine the self-redemption and time travel together. Like it₍ᐢ. .ᐢ₎♡̷ ༘

WEEK 4- 14/10

  • The SCRIPT
Start from the references

We got the reference by Klaus. The reference was about some scene and some dialougue. it does make sense to me. I like how they use simple language to elaborate on details of the scene.

Also, the beats. I try to find some reference about the “story beats”,but I still didn’t really get it.

Its have the most exact cut of the time the describtion of the scene, very precise script, like a text-based storyboard

For now I didn’t find how does it helped to our story.

This week we still talk about the story and make it more clear on the storyline and logic chain. We break it down to several squares and try yo make this organized.

WEEK 5- 21/10

  • Still the SCRIPT. this week we come up with the initial script and try to keep it in a good way in format. try! just try !!
Hahaha just if we got the good story……

I don’t know if I can put the file here. Have a try.

again, group discussion

Class with ZOE

VR stroytelling in storyboard and some useful tools

Very impressive VR experience in story,,, like a film but you can decide where you wang to go. I was exactly be obessed with a little monster movie. It reminds me about the animation SCAVENGERS(Joseph Bennett).

I LOVE this animate

Hope oneday I could make something like this!

some screenshot of Scavengers

Nothing to say ! just LOVEEEEEEEEEE

oh by the way we are so excited about our script and Ana seems to like the concept. succeeeeeeesssssseeee

I didn’t come to the class on Friday which is a really pity to me. My group mate they all seems to work fun but I (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)

They seems to be happy, and a little me on the spoon, so why there a spoon????

WEEK 6– 28/10

  • Updated Version of SCRIPT
modified the logic and make it makes more sense

We got the second version of the script. Put our FIGMA link here again just in case.

And we even have the storyboard!!! That’s works well to me so far

I know I don’t need to put the figma stuff here but just like a souvenir…Proud of this works my girls and boys

My part of the 2d storyboard- scene 3: snow ground.

WEEK 7- 04/11

BAD news. Klaus seems don’t like our script and delete some part of it and break the logic chain,,, But its a good opportunity to rethink about our story cause the PAGES are far too long Im agree with it.

WEEK 8- 11/11

  • Final version of our script-
Really need to start the storyboarding and event list guys!!

This week we have our final version of the SCIPT. Ana taught us how to do the story board in Shape XR–which is a quite good tool. We all agree to use it as our final tool to make the storyboard.

  • Storyboard
Ana taught us how to make the storyboard in Shape XR !!!

Finally understand how to make the storyboard of a VR experience. Ana helps us a lot and make it a little bit change on the first two paragraph which is truly helpful. We will start planning the space of our story and try to make the basic and draft storyboard.

WEEK 9- 25/11

Actually there are no “Final Version” of the script… But luckily we can finally start the event list and the “storyboard” base on the “pre-final” version of our script૮₍⑅˶•▿•˶⑅₎ა

Here are our basic drawing for the space plan:

We got the basic plan of each space and make it as clean and tidy as possible, its does make sense to me I think. But we do have to face a problem with the second scene: BED ROOM

It was such a simple basic scene with lots of events going on in it. Im worry about how can we explain all the movement and interactive point and how does the user moving and how they response to the characters.

So maybe we will keep it simple for now and then ask our teacher(。ӧ◡ӧ。)

We will make the eventlist and modified the script by this weekend.

WEEK 10- 02/12

  • Storyboard setting

We set the scene and space through Space XR.

Some 2d testing first- to make sure the image and imagination in our mind are all the same.

The interview site

Bedroom

Snow ground

Then start the VR storyboard setting and builting. We tested Openbrush but thats not really work on my headset. We use Shape Xr in the end.

1: Interview site

2: Bedroom

3: Snow ground(beginning)

3: snow ground (end)

4: black space(animation space)

5:Interview site (end)

  • Project critical power point editing#

This week we give the final critique of our project. The list given by Ana is helpful, we can organize our project development and the basic logic of the project creation. We worked so hard on the PowerPoint…hahah…maybe just because of we didn’t do a really clear develop line from the very beginning. figma is not enough? Im not sure… how a about everybody working on the same excel next time?

We basically talk about the Problem Statement, Project Details, Goals and Impact, Technical Feasibility and our Team in the crit. I take charge of the project details part.

And also we had the video only for this crit here.

  • Feedback from the Crit
It was base on our powerpoint

Research part – To support our theory and our impact to make it trust worthy

Make the part of research and marketing even more slighter,,,–focus on the project it self

Slides more creative, not that professional or boring–add some sketches and lines

Longer the time of the transition to make player really think they had flash back to their childhood

Our target audience- parents+educator, and then the children, VR only for 13+

The scene of the snow ground can make it little bit more asian background- add some asian culture elements such as “福“春联

When you record the video, make sure you recording in a slow speed

For the Balck space- add some technical things when Gia graduated from the shcool

Script combined with the 2d Storyboard when you give the presentation

WEEK I don’t know what–23/12

Start the report writing

And booked some academic support at once,,,,

Start from the requirements:

• your role and contribution to group work (max 200 words);

• the concept behind the story and how VR will be leveraged to tell this story (500);

• how the experience reflects relevant XR concepts, theoretical foundations and ethical design (max 700 words).

First: My role and contribution to group work

Our work included:

Setting the story#, finding references#, writing the script#, drawing 2D storyboards in sections#*, testing the software tools to complete the storyboard# (we finally chose shape XR)

Drawing scene terrain maps*, setting the characters and player movement routes based on the terrain maps*, drawing scene and model references in shapeXR*, finding 3D model assets#, importing into shapeXR for assembly and scene character movement testing#, making scene storyboards in shapeXR#*

Adjusting visual effects#, video editing for demonstrations#, and adjusting music effects#, presentation preparing#

#: done by our team together

*: done by me individually

#*: done by both

Creative designer, Technical contributor

So include the individual work and group work.

Second: The concept behind the story and how VR will be leveraged to tell this story

Why is this viewpoint important?
How is this story explained by us?
What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to the viewpoints in some previous works?
Does its conclusion have any key impact on my research and future?

The CONCEPT and theme of the story:
Gia, Asian family, The dream and the passion of art, The pressure from her parents, Chase your dream or not
Explain the theme, emotional goals-help contribute the confidence and belief on the dream, or core content that you want the audience to experience (such as exploration, emotional resonance, moral choices, etc.) of the story.
WHY use VR to tell this story:
` Introduce how VR enhances the immersion of stories: for example, the depth of space, interactivity, and emotional transmission brought by VR.
` Emphasize how VR can provide unique experiences that traditional media cannot achieve, such as interactive storytelling, immersive feelings, and how user behavior and choices affect the development of the story.
` If any innovative or specific VR technologies (such as ambient sound, gesture control, etc.) are applied.

Third: How the experience reflects relevant XR concepts, theoretical foundations and ethical design

demonstrates key concepts of XR, such as immersion, presence, user interaction, and multi-sensory experience.

based on constructivist learning theory, emphasizing that users build their understanding of self-acceptance and self-salvation through interaction and exploration.

ethical design:

inclusiveness and cultural sensitivity of the user experience

reflect:

the conflict between social expectations and personal dreams

critical:

free explore time, focus on the player’s behavior, ethical: emotional beat to potential impact on psychology.

Week I dont know what—30/12

The final video record and cutting

And the explanation

Another contribute: I write the final video’s explanation and explain the moving when in the project by my self.

Help made the subtitles of the final recording of the video.

Organized the final links of our scenes

I recorded most part of our video, and lost of versions.

Week I dont know what—06/01

Final Video Editing:

Thanks to deva! editing the video and the vioceover together. I getting help of the video fianl editting in sound effect and subtitles.

I dont have the screen shot for this cause I used Deva’s account for the editing software………….

But I did!

And after all these work, the group work comes to the end.

A BIG THANKS TO ALL OF MY TEAMATES

Leyi Zhou, Junxin Deng, Yiping Liu, Jiaheng Zhou
